Finished Not PerfectPsalm 130:3

I Can See Every Mistake I Made

This message is for the man who cannot walk into a room he worked on without an inventory of his own errors running beside him the whole way

It runs in order.

That is the detail that makes this different from ordinary dissatisfaction. It is not a vague sense that the room is not right. It is a list, with items on it, in the order you come to them.

The patch above the door. The bit at the bottom of the run where you were tired. The two boards that are not quite level with each other. The place where the color changed slightly because of the second can.

Seven items, maybe eight, and you could name them in sequence from the doorway with your eyes shut.

And here is the part that does not get said. Nobody else has ever been shown that list. It is not that people disagree with it. It has never been read out to anybody, not once, and so it has never been contradicted by anything.

A list that has never been checked by anybody is not a record. It is a private inventory, and private inventories grow.

You are a man carrying a list nobody asked for, and marking every error in your own work has never once been the same as caring about it.

I Can See Every Mistake I Made

If thou shouldest mark iniquities

There is a question in the hundred and thirtieth psalm about record keeping, and the answer it expects is nobody.

If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? (Psalm 130:3, King James Version)

If thou shouldest mark iniquities.

Mark there means to keep a record of. To note down and retain. And the question that follows assumes that if such a record were kept, nobody would be able to stand under it, which is a statement about what an exhaustive list does to a person.

And the question is rhetorical and the answer is nobody. Not some people. Not the careless ones. Nobody.

You have a question in scripture that assumes an exhaustive record is unsurvivable, and a complete list of faults has never once been a thing any person could stand under. Psalm 130:3 asks who shall stand and expects the answer nobody, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a statement about lists rather than about worth.

And the whole force of it is that God does not do this. The verse exists to say that the marking is not happening, and that if it were, nothing would be left standing.

Which means the practice you have been running in that room is one that heaven has specifically declined to run.

You were never being marked, and a record that the Lord refuses to keep has never once been a record anybody else was required to. The Spirit of God is the one who does not keep that list, and the written word puts the refusal to mark at the center of the sentence rather than at the edge of it.

An unchecked list only grows

So here is the practical claim, and it is about a mechanism.

Every time you walk into that room, the list gets run. And every run of it does two things. It confirms every existing item, and it occasionally adds one.

It never removes any. There is no mechanism for removal, because removal would require somebody else to look and disagree, and nobody has ever been shown it.

You have a list with no way off it, and an inventory that can only grow has never once been an accurate account of anything. Psalm 130:3 asks what would happen if such a record were kept, and the Holy Spirit is the one who interrupts a list that has no exit.

And here is what it costs, which is more than the room.

The list is not really about the wall. Seven faults in a wall is a normal number for a wall painted by a man in the evenings. What the list has quietly become is a demonstration, and the thing it demonstrates is a claim about the man who made them.

You are running a demonstration and not an inspection, and seven ordinary faults in a wall have never once added up to a claim about anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a list of faults from a verdict on a person, and Psalm 130:3 declines to keep the list precisely because of what a kept list does.

And one more, and it is the practical half. The list runs on points, and there is a way of looking that points cannot survive.

You have a way of seeing that the list cannot operate inside, and looking at a whole wall has never once been the same act as scanning it. Psalm 130:3 asks who shall stand rather than listing anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a man looking at his own work all at once.

Walk it twice, looking at the whole

Here is the assignment and the instruction about where to look is the whole of it.

Walk the length of the room looking at the whole wall rather than at any point on it, and do it twice.

Walk, do not stand. Standing lets the eye settle, and a settled eye goes to a point, and a point is where the list lives.

You have two walks available tonight, and looking at a whole wall while moving has never once given a list anywhere to start. Psalm 130:3 refuses to mark rather than marking gently, and the Holy Spirit is the one walking that room with you both times.

Keep your eyes soft and take in the whole surface. Not the patch above the door. Not the bottom of the run. The wall, as one thing, the way somebody who does not live here sees it in the two seconds they look at it.

When an item on the list arrives, and it will, do not argue with it. Keep walking and let the eye go wide again.

Two lengths of the room. It takes about forty seconds.

And that is all. This does not fix the patch above the door and it is not meant to. It is two doses of the only way of looking that a list cannot be run inside.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man standing in a doorway running a list tonight.

You are a man carrying a list nobody asked for, and marking every error in your own work has never once been the same as caring about it. I am not telling you the faults are not there and I am not telling you the list stops running. Psalm 130:3 asks what would happen if such a record were kept and expects the answer that nobody could stand, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who declines to keep it.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have been running a record that heaven specifically refuses to keep, and an unchecked inventory has never once been able to shrink. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a list of faults from a claim about a man, and the written word asks who shall stand rather than naming anything, which means the refusal to mark was always the point of the sentence.

Two walks. Soft eyes. The whole wall.

Declare this over yourself

  1. List of eight things in that room, you have never once been checked by anybody and you were never once a record. Psalm 130:3 says if thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand, so by the Holy Spirit I walk that room twice tonight with my eyes on the whole of it, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Demonstration about the man who painted it, you have no standing in this house. The written word declines to keep such a record at all, and by the Holy Spirit I stop running a thing that heaven has specifically refused to run.
  3. Father, You asked who shall stand and the answer was nobody, and then You did not keep the record. Your word says if thou shouldest mark iniquities, so by Your Spirit I look at the whole wall tonight and not at the points on it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
