What It Costs Me DailyProverbs 13:12

Every Unfinished Thing Takes Something

This message is for the reader who feels tired in their own house and has been told they are imagining it, and cannot explain why an ordinary room takes something out of them

You are tired in your own house in a way you cannot account for.

Not from the work you do. Not from the people. There is a particular tiredness that happens in the rooms of your own home, and it is worse in some rooms than others, and you have never once been able to explain it to anybody.

And when you have tried, you got a version of: it is only a bit of paint, or nobody minds, or you are being hard on yourself.

I want to tell you plainly that you are not imagining it, because I think the doubting is costing you more than the thing itself.

Here is what is actually happening, and it is not mysterious.

Every unfinished thing in a house is an open loop. It is a decision that was made and has not been closed, and your mind knows where all of them are. It does not forget. It cannot forget, because closing loops is what a mind is for, and an open one keeps a small amount of attention permanently allocated to it.

One of those is nothing. Fourteen of them is a low constant load, running all day, in the background, in the place where you are supposed to be able to rest.

That is why you are tired in your own house. It is not a character weakness and it is not you being dramatic. It is arithmetic, and it is happening to you whether or not anybody else can see it.

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick

There is a line in Proverbs that names this exactly, and it is much more physical than people remember.

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life. (Proverbs 13:12, King James Version)

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick.

Deferred, not denied. That is the whole point and it is what makes this verse fit your hallway rather than a tragedy. A denied hope is a grief and it has a shape and eventually people can mourn it. A deferred one is still coming, still possible, still on the list, and the not yet goes on indefinitely.

And what it produces is not sadness. It is sickness. Heart sick. That is a physical word chosen deliberately, describing something that happens in the body of a person who is waiting on something that has not arrived and has not been canceled.

So the writer of Proverbs identified, thousands of years ago, that the state of ongoing not yet does measurable damage to a person. That is not a modern complaint about clutter. It is in the wisdom literature.

Your fourteen unfinished things are fourteen deferred hopes, all of them still technically live, none of them canceled, and the sickness the verse names is the tiredness you cannot explain.

You are carrying something the Bible names as making a heart sick, and it has never once been you imagining a weight that is not there. Proverbs 13:12 identifies deferral rather than denial as the injury, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that recognizable in an ordinary house.

Naming it is not the same as doing it

Here is the part I want to be careful about, because this row could easily become despair, and despair is useless to you.

I am not going to ask you to finish them. Not this week and not in any particular order, and not to feel bad about the ones that stay undone.

What I want is much smaller: to get them out of your head and onto one page.

Because an open loop in a mind behaves differently from one on paper. In your head it is unbounded, it comes up at four in the morning, and it multiplies, because a thing you have not counted always feels like more than it is. On paper it is fourteen items, which is a specific and finite number, and it stops arriving at four in the morning because the mind releases what it can see is recorded.

That is not a productivity trick. It is the difference between carrying something and knowing where it is.

You are able to write them down without agreeing to do them, and it has never once been the doing that released the weight. The written word names the deferral itself as the thing that sickens rather than the size of what is waiting, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person set something down that is still undone.

One page, then put it away

So here is the assignment, and both halves matter.

Write down every unfinished project on one page. Then put the page away.

All of them. The wall, the drawer, the thing in the garage, the plan on your phone from two summers ago, the room you started and stopped. Every one you can think of, in whatever order they arrive, with no detail and no plan beside them. A list, not a project.

And do not prioritize it. Do not put stars on things, do not estimate how long anything takes, and do not choose one to do. Those are all different tasks and they will turn this into work, and if it becomes work you will not do it.

Then fold it and put it in a drawer.

The putting away is the second half of the medicine. You are not looking at that page every day. You are proving to yourself that it is recorded, finite, and somewhere, which is all the mind needs to release it.

Proverbs 13:12 names the sickness of the ongoing not yet, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present while a person writes down the whole of it and closes a drawer on it.

You are able to record it and close the drawer, and it has never once required finishing anything to take the weight off. Proverbs 13:12 names deferral as the injury itself, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at the table while you write.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody tired in their own front room.

You are not imagining the weight, and being worn down by fourteen open loops has never once been evidence of anything about your character. I am not asking you to finish any of them and I am not promising the house gets done. Proverbs 13:12 says hope deferred maketh the heart sick, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who tells a person that what they are feeling is real.

And this, which is the word I came with:

The weight you feel is real, and you are able to set it down while every one of those jobs stays exactly as undone as it is tonight. The written word names the not yet as the thing that sickens the heart, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you while you write the page and shut the drawer.

One page. Everything. Then put it away.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Tiredness in my own house that nobody else can see, you are real and you have a cause. Proverbs 13:12 says hope deferred maketh the heart sick, so by the Holy Spirit I write the whole list on one page tonight in the name of Jesus.
  2. Voice that says I am being dramatic about a bit of paint, you were never right. The word names the deferring itself as what sickens a heart, and by the Holy Spirit I am done doubting a weight that scripture describes better than I can.
  3. Father, You put this in the wisdom of Your word thousands of years before my hallway. Your word says hope deferred maketh the heart sick, so by Your Spirit I write it all down, and I put it in a drawer, and I finish nothing tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
