What It Costs Me DailyPsalm 127:2

I Am Tired In My Own House

This message is for the man who cannot rest at home and has never connected that tiredness to the unfinished work standing around him in every room

An evening at somebody else's house is restful and an evening at home is not.

You have probably noticed it and filed it under nothing. Everybody has off weeks. Everybody is tired. And your house is perfectly comfortable, and you like it, and there is nothing wrong with it.

Except that you sit down in your own front room and after about four minutes something makes you get up again.

Not an urgent thought. Nothing you could report. Just a low grade unsettledness that moves you out of the chair and into the kitchen for no reason, and then back, and then out again.

Here is the claim of this article and I want to put it down plainly. That is not restlessness and it is not a character flaw. It is vigilance, and vigilance is expensive, and it is running because there are four unfinished jobs inside your field of view and something in you is keeping a list.

The list does not announce itself. It just quietly forbids the deep part of resting, because you do not fully rest in a place where something is outstanding, and there are four somethings, and they are in the room.

You are a man who is tired for a reason he can name, and the tiredness in your own hallway has never once been a failure of character.

I Am Tired In My Own House

So he giveth his beloved sleep

There is a line in the psalms about working hard and sleeping badly, and the ending of it is not what anybody expects.

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. (Psalm 127:2, King James Version)

The bread of sorrows.

That is a phrase about anxious eating. Food taken while worrying, which is nourishment that does not nourish, and the psalm treats it as a symptom of trying to hold a house together by effort.

And the whole first half of the verse is about hours. Rise up early. Sit up late. Extend the day at both ends, which is what a person does when the list is longer than the day.

You have been adding hours to both ends of a day, and rising early and sitting late has never once been the thing that closes a list. Psalm 127:2 calls that whole pattern vain in plain words, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so without any contempt for the man doing it.

And then the turn, which is the reason this is the right verse. So he giveth his beloved sleep.

Giveth. Not earns. Not achieves. The sleep arrives as a gift and it arrives to the beloved, which is a category about who somebody is and not about what they got done.

You are the beloved in that sentence before anything in this house is finished, and the sleep in that verse has never once been issued against a completed list. The Spirit of God is the one who gives it, and Psalm 127:2 puts the giving on His side and the belovedness on yours.

Vigilance is the thing that costs

So here is the practical part, and it is worth being precise, because precision is what stops this becoming despair.

The unfinished jobs are not costing you guilt. Guilt would be loud and you would have noticed it. They are costing you vigilance, which is much quieter and much more expensive.

Vigilance is the low level monitoring that happens near anything outstanding. It does not think about the job. It simply refuses to let the system fully stand down while the job is in view.

You have a system that will not stand down in a room with four open items in it, and that has never once been a decision you made. Psalm 127:2 names the anxious pattern without blaming the person inside it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can tell exhaustion from indifference.

And here is why it stacks up rather than staying flat.

Nobody is vigilant about four things in sequence. It is four things at once, continuously, for as long as anybody is in that house, which is most evenings and the whole of every weekend.

That is not a moral problem. That is arithmetic, and the arithmetic explains a great deal about why an evening at somebody else's house feels like a holiday.

You were never imagining the difference between here and there, and an evening in a house with nothing outstanding in it has never once been the same kind of evening. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a front room where a man cannot settle, and the written word calls the rising early and the sitting late vain rather than calling the man weak.

And there is one more thing, and it is the mercy in it. Naming the cost does not finish anything, and it changes the cost immediately, because half of what vigilance costs is not knowing what it is.

You have a name for it now and the naming was free, and an unexplained tiredness has never once weighed the same as a named one. Psalm 127:2 speaks the pattern out loud rather than leaving it unnamed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives sleep to the beloved while the list is still standing.

Fifteen minutes in the worst room

Here is the assignment and it will sound like the opposite of a rest.

Go and sit down in the room with the most unfinished work in it. The worst one. Not the comfortable one.

Sit there for fifteen minutes doing nothing at all. No screen, no book, no tidying, no listing what needs doing.

You have fifteen minutes of sitting available tonight, and sitting down in the middle of unfinished work has never once required the work to be done first. Psalm 127:2 gives sleep to the beloved rather than to the finished, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in that room for the whole fifteen minutes.

Here is what it is for. Vigilance runs hardest when you are near a thing and not looking at it. Sitting in the middle of it, deliberately, on purpose, in full view, takes away the thing vigilance is for.

It will be uncomfortable for the first few minutes. Around the eight or nine minute mark most people find it goes quiet, and the quiet is the point, and the quiet is what has been missing from that house for about a year.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man in his own front room tonight.

You are a man who is tired for a reason he can name, and the tiredness in your own hallway has never once been a failure of character. I am not telling you the four jobs get done and I am not handing you a weekend. Psalm 127:2 calls the early rising and the late sitting vain and then gives sleep as a gift, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who does the giving.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You were the beloved in that verse long before anything in this house got finished, and the sleep in it has never once been something a man earns by clearing a list. The Spirit of God is the one who hands it over, and the written word puts the giving on His side of the sentence, which means the rest was never waiting on the paintwork.

Fifteen minutes. The worst room. Nothing in your hands.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Vigilance that will not let me sit down, you are not my character and you were never once a thing I chose. Psalm 127:2 says so he giveth his beloved sleep, so by the Holy Spirit I sit down in the middle of my own unfinished work tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Tiredness I could not explain, you have a name now and the naming cost me nothing. The written word calls rising early and sitting late vain and never once calls the man weak, and by the Holy Spirit I stop carrying you as evidence about myself.
  3. Father, You gave sleep to the beloved and You never once made it a payment for a finished house. Your word says so he giveth his beloved sleep, so by Your Spirit I sit in the worst room for fifteen minutes tonight, and I do nothing while I am in there.
