What It Costs Me DailyProverbs 12:25

It Is In My Shoulders

This message is for the man carrying the unfinished work in his body and treating the ache as an unrelated thing that happens to have started the same spring

It is across the top of your shoulders and up into the back of your neck.

It has been there since about the spring. You have put it down to the way you sleep, or to the chair at work, or to being the age you are now, and there is a reasonable case for every one of those.

Here is the question nobody has asked you. What else started in the spring.

Because if you go back and line the two things up, the ache and the day the work in that back room stopped, there is a good chance they are within a fortnight of each other.

That is not mysticism and it is not a claim about your health. It is an observation about how a person carries an unresolved thing, which is physically, across the shoulders, with the neck slightly forward, for months.

And the reason it has never been connected is that nobody thinks of a stalled project as a load. A load is a thing you pick up. This is a thing you walk past. It does not look like weight and it behaves exactly like weight.

You are a man whose body has been keeping an honest record, and an ache that started the same month as a stalled job has never once been a coincidence you imagined.

It Is In My Shoulders

Heaviness in the heart maketh it stoop

There is a proverb that puts an inward weight and a physical posture in the same sentence, which is unusual and deliberate.

Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad. (Proverbs 12:25, King James Version)

Maketh it stoop.

Stooping is physical. It is a word about a spine and a set of shoulders. The proverb does not describe the heaviness as a mood or as an attitude. It describes what it does to a frame.

Which means the connection you have been dismissing as far fetched is sitting there in the text, stated plainly, several thousand years ago.

You have a body that has been reporting accurately, and a proverb has never once treated the stoop as something separate from the weight. Proverbs 12:25 puts the heaviness and the posture in one clause, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a mercy rather than another thing to be anxious about.

And now the second half, which is where the proverb goes somewhere surprising. But a good word maketh it glad.

The remedy is not a solution. It is a word. Something said. The verse does not answer heaviness by removing the cause, it answers it by somebody saying something.

You have been waiting on a finished room when what that verse offers is a sentence, and a good word has never once been a lesser thing than a solved problem. The Spirit of God is the one who speaks and who moves people to speak, and Proverbs 12:25 sets a word directly against a stoop as though the two were properly matched.

Nobody has said it out loud in this house

So here is the practical part and it is specific.

That job has never been said out loud. Not once, not by you, not by anybody in the house, not as a sentence with the cost in it.

Plenty of other things have been said. It needs doing. I will get to it. Do not go in there. Those are all administrative. None of them is the sentence.

The sentence is the one that names what it is doing to you, and it has never been spoken by anybody.

You are carrying something that has never once been said out loud in your own house, and an unspoken load has never once been a lighter one. Proverbs 12:25 matches a good word against a stoop, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a plain sentence possible between two people standing in a kitchen.

And here is why it stays unspoken, and it is not pride exactly.

There is no acceptable way to say it. Try composing it. My shoulders hurt because of the back room. Read that back and you can hear how it lands, and so you have never said it, and the not saying is entirely reasonable and it is also the reason nothing has moved.

You were never refusing to speak, and a sentence with no socially acceptable form has never once been a sentence a man chose to swallow. The Spirit of God is the one who removes the need for it to sound respectable, and the written word says a good word makes a heavy heart glad without requiring the word to be elegant.

And here is the last piece, and it takes the pressure off the whole thing. The proverb does not say a good word fixes it. It says it maketh it glad, which is a change in the man rather than a change in the room.

You have something available tonight that changes the man and not the back room, and gladness has never once had to wait for a finished house. Proverbs 12:25 offers the word as the answer to the stoop, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what gets said between two ordinary people.

Name one job out loud to one person

Here is the assignment and it is one sentence to one person.

Pick the job that is heaviest. Not the biggest and not the most urgent. The one that, if it came off your back tonight, would take the most off your shoulders.

Then say it out loud to one person. Your wife, a friend, a brother, whoever is nearest and safe.

Something like: if I could take one thing off my back it would be the back room, and I have not said that to anybody.

You have one sentence and one person available tonight, and naming the heaviest thing has never once obliged anybody to do anything about it. Proverbs 12:25 answers a stoop with a word, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing there while a man says something awkward in a kitchen.

And then here is the second instruction, which matters. Name nothing else.

Do not list the others. Do not say and the yard and the gutters and the garage. One job. Naming seven is a way of naming none, because a list is a fog, and the whole point of this is to say one specific thing about one specific room.

Then let them respond however they respond and do not manage it.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man rolling his shoulders tonight.

You are a man whose body has been keeping an honest record, and an ache that started the same month as a stalled job has never once been a coincidence you imagined. I am not telling you the back room gets done and I am not telling you the ache goes. Proverbs 12:25 sets a good word against a stoop, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who carries a word between two people.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have been carrying a load that nobody in this house has ever named out loud, and the silence around it has never once made it weigh less. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an awkward sentence possible, and the written word answers heaviness with something said rather than with something finished, which means the relief was never waiting on the paint.

One job. One person. Out loud. Then stop.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Ache across my shoulders since the spring, you are a record and not a complaint, and you were never once unrelated to what stopped in March. Proverbs 12:25 says heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop, so by the Holy Spirit I name the heaviest job out loud tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Silence in this house, you have no authority over what gets said in my kitchen. The written word answers a stoop with a good word and never once with a finished room, and by the Holy Spirit I say one plain sentence to one person and I name nothing else.
  3. Father, You put the heaviness and the stooping in one sentence and then You answered it with a word. Your word says a good word maketh it glad, so by Your Spirit I say the true thing out loud tonight, and I let them answer however they answer.
