When It Is Actually DoneExodus 33:14

I Started Another One The Same Night

This message is for the man who could not sit still in a finished room and went looking for the next unfinished thing within about two hours

Two hours.

That is the gap. Finished at seven, and by nine you were in the garage looking at something else with a tape measure in your hand.

And it did not feel like restlessness at the time. It felt like enthusiasm. A thing had gone well and the natural response to a thing going well is to get on with the next one, and anybody watching would have called that a good evening.

Here is what is worth looking at, and it is not obvious.

There has been no evening in about four years when there was not an open job in this house. Not one. Every time something closed, something opened, usually within a day, and the state of having nothing outstanding has not occurred in that whole time.

Which means a man does not know what that state is like. He has no experience of it, cannot picture it, and has been organizing his evenings around never finding out.

You are a man who does not have to keep one open, and finishing a job has never once required another one to be started the same night.

I Started Another One The Same Night

My presence shall go with thee

There is an exchange in Exodus where a man asks for something and gets an answer with two halves, and the second half is the one that lands here.

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. (Exodus 33:14, King James Version)

And I will give thee rest.

Give. That is the verb, and it settles the question of where rest comes from. It is handed over rather than arrived at, and nothing in that sentence describes it as something a man produces by getting to the end of his work.

And it is attached to the first half rather than to any achievement. My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. The rest comes with the presence, not with the finishing.

You have a rest that is given rather than earned, and the end of a job has never once been the thing that produces it. Exodus 33:14 uses the word give and attaches the rest to a presence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that available on an ordinary Tuesday.

And notice the first half properly. My presence shall go with thee. Go. It is not a promise of somewhere to stop, it is a promise of company in the moving.

Which means a man who is always working is not outside that promise either. The presence goes with the going. Nothing here says the rest is for people who have finished everything.

You were never outside that sentence during the four years, and a presence that goes has never once required anybody to stand still first. The Spirit of God is the one who goes and who gives, and the written word attaches the rest to Him rather than to a cleared list.

The open job is doing a job

So here is the practical claim, and it is not about industriousness.

That open job is not there because there is work to do. There is always work to do. It is there because of what its absence would feel like.

An open job supplies a specific thing. It tells a man what he is for this week. It fills the space at the end of a day with a next action. And it means there is never a moment in which a person is simply sitting in a house with nothing outstanding, which is a moment a great many men have quietly never had.

You have been keeping something open in order not to find out what closed feels like, and a next job has never once been started only because it needed doing. Exodus 33:14 gives rest rather than instructing anybody to produce it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an empty evening survivable.

And here is what that has cost, and it is the specific loss this row is about.

Nothing in this house has ever been received. Every finished thing has been immediately superseded, within hours, by the next open one, and a finished thing that is instantly superseded never gets to be finished for any length of time.

You have four years of completed work that has never once been allowed to stand as completed, and a job closed at seven has never once been received by a man who opened another at nine. The Spirit of God is the one who gives rest as a present tense thing, and Exodus 33:14 attaches it to a presence rather than to a stage of work.

And one more, and it is why the assignment is three days rather than an evening.

You have never once tested what three days with nothing open is actually like, and a state nobody has experienced has never once been a state anybody could be afraid of accurately. Exodus 33:14 promises rest as a gift, and the Holy Spirit is the one present through three days in which nothing starts.

Three days, nothing started

Here is the assignment and the length is deliberate.

Start nothing new for three days.

Not one evening, which is short enough to be got through by sitting on your hands. Three days, which is long enough for the state itself to be experienced rather than endured.

You have three days available in which nothing needs to begin, and an evening with nothing open has never once been an evening wasted. Exodus 33:14 says I will give thee rest, and the Holy Spirit is the one present through all three of them.

Finish nothing either. This is not a clearing exercise. If something is already in progress, it can wait three days, and if something breaks, that is a repair rather than a project and it does not count.

No measuring. No looking at things with a view to them. No opening the folder on the phone, which is the same move in a quieter coat.

You have three dates to write tonight, and a resolution has never once survived a Tuesday evening with an idea in it. So write them down somewhere you will see them. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, on a scrap by the kettle. Exodus 33:14 gives the rest rather than requiring it to be produced, and the Spirit of God is the one present through all three.

Three dates written down is a fact with an end on it, and the end is what makes the middle of it bearable. It is the same reason a timer works where an intention does not.

Then on the fourth day, start whatever you like.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man with a tape measure in his hand at nine on a Saturday.

You are a man who does not have to keep one open, and finishing a job has never once required another one to be started the same night. I am not telling you to stop working and I am not telling you the three days are comfortable. Exodus 33:14 gives rest as a gift attached to a presence, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is the one giving it.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have four years of finished work that was superseded within hours, and a completed thing has never once been received by a man who opened the next one the same night. The Spirit of God is the one who gives rest in the present tense, and the written word attaches it to a presence that goes rather than to a house with nothing left in it, which means it was never waiting on the last job.

Three days. Nothing started. Write the dates.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Open job I keep in this house at all times, you are not work and you were never once started because anything needed doing. Exodus 33:14 says I will give thee rest, so by the Holy Spirit I start nothing for three days and write the dates down, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Two hours between finishing and beginning, you have cost me four years of things that were never received. The written word attaches the rest to a presence and hands it over as a gift, and by the Holy Spirit I let one finished thing stand finished for three days.
  3. Father, You said my presence shall go with thee, and then You said You would give the rest rather than asking anybody to produce it. Your word says I will give thee rest, so by Your Spirit I keep nothing open for three days starting tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
