One Item Is A Real Answer

One does not feel like an answer to nineteen.

That is the honest arithmetic, and it is the reason the evening usually goes the way it goes. If you finish one thing tonight, there are eighteen tomorrow. And eighteen is still, by any reasonable measure, a house full of unfinished things.

So doing one does not solve anything, and a person is not going to spend a Tuesday evening on something that does not solve anything, and so nothing gets spent and there are still nineteen.

Here is the assumption underneath all of that, and it has never been examined. The assumption is that an answer has to be proportionate to the problem to count as an answer.

That sounds obviously true and it is not true of anything. It is not true of money, it is not true of illness, and it is not true of houses. Small things change situations all the time in ways that have nothing to do with their size relative to the situation.

You are a woman who can answer nineteen with one, and an answer smaller than the problem has never once been the same as no answer.

Not by might, nor by power

There is a word given in Zechariah to a man in the middle of a building project that was not going well, and it removes two measures at once.

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. (Zechariah 4:6, King James Version)

Not by might, nor by power.

Both of those are words about scale. Might is force. Power is capacity. Between them they cover the whole of what a person would reach for if the question were how do I match the size of this.

And both are taken off the table in one clause.

You have two measures of scale removed in a single sentence, and the size of an effort has never once been the thing that verse says anything gets done by. Zechariah 4:6 refuses both might and power by name, and the Holy Spirit is the one named in their place.

And notice who it is said to and when. It is said to a man with a half built temple, an inadequate workforce, and a project that visibly did not have the resources it needed.

The word given to him was not more resources. The word given to him was that resources were not the operative measure, which is a very different kind of help and is the only kind available when the arithmetic does not work.

You were never going to be handed a proportionate answer, and a situation where the numbers do not work has never once been a situation with nothing available in it. The Spirit of God is the one named in the place where might and power were, and the written word removes the scale question rather than solving it.

Proportion is the wrong instrument

So here is the practical claim, and it is where this row earns its keep.

The question that has been running is whether one is enough for nineteen. That is a proportion question, and proportion questions have only two answers, and one of them is no and the other one is also no when the numbers are like that.

The question that actually matters is different. It is not whether one is enough. It is whether one is better than none.

You have been running a comparison that could only ever come out one way, and one against nineteen has never once been the comparison anybody needed to make. Zechariah 4:6 removes the scale question entirely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who replaces a hopeless comparison with a workable one.

And here is the second half, which is where the movement is.

One against none is a comparison that comes out favorably every single time. And it is the true comparison, because the actual choice on a Tuesday evening is never between one and nineteen. It is between doing one and doing nothing, which is the only choice that has ever been on offer.

You have a real choice in front of you tonight and it was never the one you have been weighing, and the alternative on offer has never once been all nineteen. The Spirit of God is the one who puts a true choice in front of a person, and Zechariah 4:6 answers a resource problem by changing what is being measured.

And one more, and it is the specific mercy in this row.

You were never obliged to solve it, and an evening that did not fix a house has never once been an evening that did nothing. Zechariah 4:6 takes might and power off the table and names the Spirit instead, and the Holy Spirit is the one present in an answer that is completely out of proportion to the question.

One item, and write the new number

Here is the assignment and the second half is what makes the first half count.

Finish one item tonight.

The smallest one. The one that takes eleven minutes. Do not pick for importance, pick for completability, because the whole design of this evening is an item that ends.

You have one completable thing available tonight, and the smallest item on that page has never once counted for less than the largest one. Zechariah 4:6 removes might and power as measures, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that room while something small gets finished.

Then write the number down. On the list, at the top, or on a scrap beside it.

Write nineteen, draw a line through it, and write eighteen underneath.

That is the whole of the second half. It takes four seconds and it is the part that does the work, because the number is the thing that gets carried around and nothing has ever changed it in a way anybody could see.

You have a figure in your own handwriting that is one fewer than it was, and eighteen has never once claimed to be a solved house. It is a fact rather than a feeling and it is still there in the morning. Zechariah 4:6 takes might and power off the table, and the Spirit of God is the one present while a number comes down by one.
