The Ladder Has Moved Four Times

The ladder is by the window now.

It was by the door for a while. Before that it lived on the landing, propped against the rail, and for about three weeks in the spring it was in the garage, which felt at the time like progress.

Four moves. That is the honest count, and every single one of them took effort. Every one of them involved deciding something, and lifting something, and being slightly out of breath afterward.

And the wall has not been touched.

Here is the thing nobody says out loud about a house with an unfinished job in it. The effort is real. A man in this situation is not resting. He is moving equipment around a house, week after week, and it costs him something every time, and at the end of the year there is nothing on the wall.

That is a specific and exhausting way to live, and it is not the same thing as doing nothing, whatever the voice in the back of your head has been calling it.

You are a man whose hands have been on this the whole time, and moving the tools four times has never once meant you were doing nothing.

The door that turns and stays

There is a proverb that is a picture of a mechanism, and I want to hand it to you as a mechanism and not as a name.

As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful man upon his bed. (Proverbs 26:14, King James Version)

Watch the door and leave the man out of it for a second.

A door on a hinge is in motion. It swings hard. It makes a noise. Anybody standing in the hall would say that door is going somewhere, and it never gets anywhere at all, because the thing it is fixed to does not travel.

That is the picture. Motion that returns to the place it started from. And the proverb is not a slur, it is a diagram, and the diagram fits a ladder that has been in four rooms and never once up against the wall that needs it.

You are looking at a diagram and not at a verdict, and Proverbs 26:14 has never once been permitted in this house as a name for the man reading it. The written word gives a picture of a hinge so the mechanism can be seen from outside, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hands a man a picture instead of an accusation.

And notice what the proverb does not say. It does not say the door is weak. It does not say the door is a bad door. It says the door is hinged, which is a fact about how it is fixed and not a fact about its character.

That distinction is the whole of this. Something in the way your work is fixed to this house sends the motion back to where it came from, and the motion itself has been genuine the entire time.

You have been moving with real effort inside a mechanism that returns you to the start, and the Spirit of God is the one who can tell effort apart from result. Proverbs 26:14 is a picture of a hinge and not a measure of a man, and the effort has been there in every one of those four moves.

What the moving is actually doing

So here is the practical claim, and it is not what a man expects.

Moving the ladder is not avoidance. It is rehearsal.

Each time it gets moved, something in you is trying to get the setup right, because some part of you believes the job cannot start until the conditions are correct. Better light. Out of the way of the door. Somewhere it will not be a trip hazard. Every one of those is a real thought and every one of them is about starting.

You were never once running away from that wall, and a man who moves his equipment toward a job four times is a man trying to begin. The Holy Spirit is the one who reads the intention under the motion, and Proverbs 26:14 describes a swing that returns rather than a will that refuses.

And here is the hinge itself, the actual fixing that sends the swing back.

The setup has become the job. Getting the ladder into the right place is the task that gets completed, and completing it delivers the feeling of a task completed, and that feeling is the thing that lets the evening close.

It is not laziness. It is a completed task standing in for a different completed task, and it works well enough to fool a tired man on a Wednesday.

You are able to see the substitution now, and naming it has never once required you to think worse of yourself. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a man his own mechanism without shaming him with it, and Proverbs 26:14 keeps the language on the hinge.

Two rungs, and leave it standing

Here is the assignment and it is deliberately small enough to be slightly annoying.

Put the ladder where the job actually is. Not where it is convenient, not out of the way, where the job is.

Then climb two rungs. Not to the top. Two. Stand there for a moment and look at the thing from working height, which is a completely different view from the one available down on the floor.

Then come down.

You have a job that can be met from two rungs tonight, and you were never required to be at the top of the ladder to have begun. Proverbs 26:14 is about a swing that comes back, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is standing at the foot of a stepladder with a man who climbed two rungs and stopped.

You have one last move in you tonight and it is the one that ends the returning, and that ladder was never once obliged to go back against the rail. So leave it standing where the work is and do not put it back, because that is the part that breaks the hinge. Proverbs 26:14 pictures a swing that comes home to where it started, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes tomorrow morning a morning with nothing to set up.
